Meter reading recognition from photos

Snap the meter, and the reading is already logged

A field worker takes a photo with a phone. The system finds the dial or display, reads the value and the device number, and writes them to your accounting system. If the digits are unreadable or the value breaks from history, the photo goes to a person.

Where readings get lost

  • A field worker photographs forty meters, and in the evening a dispatcher spends an hour typing numbers from the gallery into Excel.
  • A misplaced decimal point makes consumption jump tenfold in the report. Nobody notices until the bill arrives a month later.
  • The photo is shot at an angle with glare. A retake is impossible: the worker is already at another site.
  • New equipment was received at the warehouse and serial numbers were typed in by hand. Half the warranty claims now cannot be traced.

What changes after launch

  • 01Readings reach your system on the day of the round, not at month end
  • 02An odd value shows up at once, while it can still be rechecked on site
  • 03Equipment serial numbers are recorded without typos

How the system works

  1. 01

    Takes in the photo

A shot from a mobile app, a Telegram bot or a round folder. The photo is tied to a metering point by a QR tag on the device, by the route or by the worker’s choice.

  2. 02

Finds the device and the dial

Digital display, mechanical counter, needle gauge, nameplate on the housing. We train the model on photos of your devices, not on stock images.

  3. 03

    Reads the value and number

Reading, units, serial number, model, each with the model’s confidence. Glare, dirt or a bad angle send the photo back with a retake request while the worker is still nearby.

  4. 04

    Checks against history

Rules, not the neural network, compare the new reading with the previous one: a value lower than before, a sharp jump, pressure out of range. Such values never slip into the books silently; they get a flag.

  5. 05

    Writes to your system

Reading and number go to ERP (1C), your metering system or equipment register, along with the photo and timestamp. Anything doubtful waits for a person to confirm.

Which scale is yours?

One task, three different projects. Pick the one that looks like you and press “I want this” — your request arrives tagged, and we send an estimate in 1–2 days.

Small business

common start

A property manager or small company where a couple of people walk round dozens of meters of one type once a month.

What we build

  • One device type, for example electricity meters
  • Photo upload via a web form or Telegram bot
  • Each reading checked against the previous value
  • Export to Excel or your own metering sheet
Integrations
Telegram, Excel or Google Sheets, email
Where it runs
Cloud: no infrastructure needed on your side
Timeline
Guideline: 1.5–2.5 months to the first working version

Mid-size business

common start

Several sites and device types, such as meters, gauges and equipment nameplates, with data needed in ERP (1C) and the maintenance system.

What we build

  • Several device and nameplate types
  • Linking to metering points by QR tags or routes
  • Review queue for disputed and unreadable photos
  • Records written to ERP (1C) or the maintenance system
  • Support contract: we retrain the model for new devices
Integrations
ERP (1C), maintenance (CMMS) system, field worker mobile app
Where it runs
Cloud or your own server
Timeline
Guideline: 2.5–4 months to the first working version

Enterprise

common start

A network of sites or several branches with thousands of devices, their own inspection rules and security requirements.

What we build

  • One register of devices and metering points across branches
  • Roles: field worker, reviewer, branch manager
  • Audit log: who took the photo, who confirmed, who corrected a value
  • Reports on missed rounds and suspicious readings
  • Service under an SLA
Integrations
Corporate ERP, CMMS, dispatch systems, internal APIs
Where it runs
Your servers or a closed perimeter: photos and metering data never leave it
Timeline
Guideline: 4+ months, starting with a pilot at one branch

Pilot from RUB 500,000. Beyond that we price by task and hours.

Questions

Why not just install smart meters?

If you can, do. But replacing hundreds of devices is expensive and not always possible: old pressure gauges, leased equipment, nameplates that transmit nothing at all. Photos work with what is already on the wall.

What if the model misreads a digit?

It will, especially with glare, dirty glass or a sharp angle. That is why low-confidence values and values that break from history go to a person along with the photo. A confirmed reading enters the books; a disputed one does not.

Have you done a project like this?

Not for meters yet. We have built drawing and document recognition with the same logic: the model reads, rules check, a person confirms what is doubtful. Before we start, we run your photos and tell you what the model will read reliably and what it will not.

How much does it cost?

Pilot from RUB 500,000. Beyond that, cost depends on the task and hours: send fifty photos of your devices taken the usual way, and we will estimate within 1–2 days.
